It is not a “jump in and ride” deal, but more of a fixer-upper.  It came with a battery charger, but that did not work, and of course all of the batteries are dead.

Six large, heavy 8 volt batteries that weigh a ton and killed me just lifting them out of the battery bay.  Wow.  6 x 8 = 48 – 48 Volt golf cart.  They all need to be replaced.  And a new charger.

Of course, being me that thinks I can fix anything, decided to buy a new charger for the cart and try to bring the batteries back to life. 

A couple day wait on Amazon and a shiny new charger arrived.  Plugged in perfectly to the cart and well, it did not recognize anything, no batteries, no nothing, it just blinked yellow.

Dammit.

So my next call was to a local Golf Cart shop to get battery prices.  $1900 for the lead-acid 8 volt replacement batteries, or $2995 for a single Lithium battery kit. Ouch.

I again pulled up my friend Amazon and ordered a $1299 Lithium battery kit (Comes with battery, charger, gauge, and mounting hardware) that was on a flash sale for $949.

It is advertised to run for 50 miles, and will take 6000 charge cycles.  35% more speed/power/longevity that the standard lead-acid batteries. I am in, excited because it will arrive today and I will get it installed.

Over time we all end up with spare old PC’s that their time of use has come and gone.  They fill closets, garages, and spare rooms just sitting there and collecting dust.

Myself, always being a big proponent of Linux often bring them back to life and install the ‘latest and greatest Linux distribution, just to kill time, check it out or to see ‘what’s hot’ in today’s technology stack.

I like to read, so I find myself often scouring the internet and looking at how other people use their old PC’s to get just a little bit more of an extra life out of them.  Pretty much always the same thing, build a media server, build a NAS, build a file-share system, donate it to the Boy Scouts of America or someplace that can use the old hardware.

All good choices and I do encourage donating whenever possible, it keeps them from filling up landfills and recycle bins and gives them that extra life that makes a difference.

Recently I stumbled across a new Linux Distribution (Distro) called Winux.

I knew right away what I was info with this one, but still wanted to check it out. My day job keeps me tied to the Microsoft world, Windows 11, Office 365, Teams and all the paid online Microsoft infrastructure.

All good when the company is flipping the bill, but at home, sometimes you have that spare PC you just want to use for ‘free’.  This distro really tips the scales and makes it very easy to build a very Microsoft like experience on Linuz and run it absolutely free.  (It even includes a free “Office Suite to make it complete.)

Winux – Windows Theme Over Linux

No hardware limitations, no absurd requirements. Inspired by Windows 10 and 11, Winux Operating System is fast and secure, as a Linux-based operating system should be. Winux natively supports several Windows programs (.exe and .msi) through the pre-installed Wine. It also supports Android and PlayStore through PowerTools.
